Scotland and France’s love affair spans 800 years—the oldest international friendship on the planet! The Auld Alliance Tartan is a heartfelt homage to the deep loyalty between our two great nations, using Scotland’s icon, i.e. tartan, to celebrate our enduring bond and to promote interculturalism. The Auld Alliance dates back to 1295 when both nations granted dual citizenship; laying the foundation for the unique relationship that thrives to this day.
You just need to wander the streets of Edinburgh to experience this in action. The camaraderie (getting a wee French word in!) when Scotland and France face off at Murrayfield is tangible - Edinburgh is buzzing with energy and friendly rivalry. Likewise, sit in any French household while Scotland is playing football (usually not that well!) and our French pals will all be rooting for us.
The Auld Alliance Tartan was commissioned in 2004 by Mme Olga Poivre d'Arvor, Director of the French Institute in Scotland. The tartan symbolizes the enduring Franco-Scottish connection. The design of the tartan took months of discussion and a round table event, with French and Scottish Representatives finally deciding on the composition of colour and design.
The tartan has soul and authenticity as well as being one of those most vibrant tartans around. It does a great job of interweaving the French Tricolour and the Scottish Saltire, celebrating our interwoven history, heritage and culture. Scottish people go around unconsciously using so many words that are derived from French in our everyday Scots language like grand, coup, bonny, fash and even Hogmanay!
Express your love for our rich history. Embrace the Auld Alliance Tartan and honour the unique bond between Scotland and France and keep it going for another 800 years!
You can order our Auld Alliance tartan by the metre, we can make you a scarf, tie, or cushion cover.
