Launched by Provost Pat O'Brien for use by anyone from or associated with the County of East Lothian with express permission of International Tartans. The colours of this tartan were chosen to symbolize the leading role which the county has played in shaping the whole history of Scotland; green represents its predominately rural landscape, gold the abundance and variety of its agriculture, blue represents the Firth of Forth and its many ports and fishing villages, purple symbolizes the numerous historic castles, black represents coal, first discovered in Scotland by monks on the shores of Prestonpans, which together make up the County.
