The Design of our Newcastle Tartan

The Newcastle tartan uses the iconic black and white of Newcastle United Football Club with the gold and blue from their badge. All of our tartan is woven locally with 100% British wool, and can be ordered by the metre or half metre. We can also create a bespoke Newcastle tartan product for you. Choose from a wide range which includes kilts, shawls, ties, cosmetic bags and more. They will be handmade in our workshop in the South of Scotland.

The Story behind our Newcastle Tartan

Commissioned by supporters of Newcastle United Football Club, and designed in their colours for use by anyone from or associated with the district of Newcastle. Recognised by Councillor Diane Parkham, Lord Mayor of Newcastle. Coloured cloth has long been used to symbolise cultural identity: the purple worn by Roman Emperors, the heraldic dressings of Medieval knights, and the ‘red coats’ of the British Army are well-known historical examples. In due course many organised groups came to be identified simply by colour. One of these was the shepherds of Northumbria, who wore a heavy duty woollen cloth especially for use on the exposed hills in the North of England and Borders area of Scotland. This black and white patterned cloth became known as the ‘Shepherds Check’ and these were the colours chosen by Newcastle United Football Club for their team jerseys.
