The Design of our Chou Chou Japanese Tartan

This summery design blends blue, white, gold, and red. The cool blue tones evoke clear summer skies and tranquil waters, while crisp white reflects the bright, airy feel of the season. Accents of gold and red bring warmth and vibrancy. All of our tartan is woven locally with 100% British wool, and can be ordered by the metre or half metre. We can also create a bespoke Chou Chou tartan product for you. Choose from a wide range which includes kiltsshawlstiescosmetic bags and more. They will be handmade in our workshop in the South of Scotland.

The Story behind our Japanese Tartan

Chouchou is the Japanese word for butterfly, which are strongly linked with summer in Japan. They are often depicted in traditional art, poetry, and seasonal motifs, symbolising transformation, fleeting beauty, and the warmth of the season. Their graceful movements and presence in lush gardens make them a common summer symbol.

This is one of a set of 4 tartans in 'The Four Seasons' collection by designer David McGill. Created in 2008 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first treaty between Japan and the UK (1858), and the arrival of Thomas Blake Glover, the Scottish Samurai, in Nagasaki (1859).
