The Design of our Catalunya Escocia/Catalonian Tartan

The design for the ‘Cataluña’ tartan showcases the traditional red and yellow of the triangle and star of the Estelada with blue and white to represent both the Estelada and the Saltire of Scotland. Woven locally, our Catalonian tartan is crafted using 100% British wool for premium quality and sustainability.

The Story behind our Catalunya Escocia/Catalonian Tartan

On 9th November 2017, the people of Catalonia planned to hold a referendum on independence - a pivotal moment in the region’s modern history. Although the referendum did not take place, a symbolic response emerged in the form of the Catalonia tartan, designed to honour the spirit of Catalan identity and self-determination.

This distinctive tartan was created by David McGill, who brought together friends and collaborators from Barcelona and Edinburgh to reflect on the colours and symbols that would truly capture the essence of Catalonia. The result is a deeply meaningful, emblematic tartan design that celebrates Catalonia’s cultural pride and enduring desire for autonomy... Viva cataluña libre! Long live free Catalonia!
