The colours of the German Tartan combine the colours in the flags of Germany and Scotland, symbolising links between Germany and Scotland over the centuries.

The Story behind our German Tartan

The connections between Scotland and Germany stretch back centuries - not just through trade, but through shared ideas, culture, and values. Geography played a key role: in the age of sea travel, Scotland had easier access to Northern Europe than to other parts of the British Isles. These water routes enabled early and lasting links between the two nations, with the first recorded trade links in 1297 after William Wallace's victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge. 

Today, 38 twinning partnerships between Scottish and German towns and cities continue to celebrate this long-standing friendship. Our German Tartan honours these enduring ties - a vibrant symbol of shared heritage, cultural exchange, and mutual respect.
