The Design of our Kiku Tartan

Chrysanthemums or "kiku" (菊) bloom in Japan from September to November and are Japan's most popular autumn flower. The design of this Japanese tartan reflects the reds, purples and yellows of the traditional chrysanthemum. All of our tartan is woven locally with 100% British wool, and can be ordered by the metre or half metre. We can also create a bespoke Kiku tartan product for you.

The Story behind our Kiku Tartan

Originally commissioned by Mr Eric Melvin of Edinburgh and now one of a set of four tartans in 'The Four Seasons' collection, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first treaty between Japan and the UK (1858) and, the arrival of Thomas Blake Glover, the Scottish Samurai, in Nagasaki (1859). Chrysanthemums, a symbol of nobility and longevity in Japan, are also the emblem of the Imperial Family. Introduced from China in the 5th century, they have been cultivated in Japan for over 1,500 years and hold deep cultural and historical significance.
