About Nihon (Japanese) Tartan - Available for PRE-ORDER
Nihon Tartan - Availability
We are currently taking pre-orders of our Nihon tartan. Please order in the usual way, and we will contact you as soon as it is available.
The Design of our Nihon Tartan
Nihon literally translated means “the sun's origin", or the Land of the Rising Sun (日本) which in Japanese means “Japan". This tartan marries reds and blues in a clean, classic design. All of our tartan is woven locally with 100% British wool, and can be ordered by the metre or half metre. We can also create a bespoke Nihon tartan product for you.
The Story behind our Nihon Tartan
Originally commissioned by Mr Eric Melvin of Edinburgh and now one of a set of four tartans in 'The Four Seasons' collection, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first treaty between Japan and the UK (1858) and, the arrival of Thomas Blake Glover, the Scottish Samurai, in Nagasaki (1859). Nihon or 'the sun's origin' references Japan's geographical position east of China, where the sun appears to rise first and the sun deity 'Amaterasu' in Shinto mythology.
Nihon is a registered Tartan
