Norwegian Tartan

The Norwegian tartan reflects the deep historical and cultural ties between Norway and Scotland, with colours inspired by their national flags. Their Viking heritage is evident in Scotland’s Norse place names, Gaelic language, and shared bloodline. For nearly 400 years, Norwegians have also embraced tartan. Their bond strengthened during World War II, symbolised today by Edinburgh’s Christmas tree gift from Norway. This mutual respect is highlighted by King Olaf’s knighthood in the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s highest honour. To mark Norway’s centenary of independence in 1905, the Official Norwegian Centennial Tartan was commissioned, celebrating this enduring Nordic connection.
