The Swedish tartan combines the colours in the flags of Sweden and Scotland – a blend of two subtly different blues, white and the iconic yellow. All of our tartan is woven locally with 100% wool and wherever possible, with British wool. It can be ordered by the metre or half metre and we can also create a bespoke Swedish tartan product for you. Choose from a wide range which includes kilts, shawls, ties, cosmetic bags and more. They will be handmade in our workshop in the South of Scotland.
The Story behind our Swedish Tartan
This tartan was the first of the Nordic Tartans Collection and was designed in 2004, and registered in 2005. It was approved by Torvald Colliander, the then Consul General in Edinburgh. The historical association between Sweden and Scotland extends over 900 years to the age of the Vikings. Their influence can be traced through some of the Festivals still celebrated to this day in the North and East of Scotland, in the numerous Norse place-names around our coastline, and in the original language of Scotland – Gaelic. And perhaps most importantly, many of the Norse invaders married and settled in Scotland, so that we share a common blood-line to this day. Although tartan is associated with Scotland it has been known in Sweden for almost 400 years, for some 40,000 Scots mercenaries, mostly from the Highlands, fought in the Kalmar Wars between Sweden and Denmark. Many of these Scottish soldiers eventually settled in Sweden and became integrated into the local community, thus adding to our common heritage. The tartan has been used in school projects alongside the other 4 Nordic Tartans; Danish, Icelandic, Finnish and Norwegian, to celebrate the shared history and heritage of Scotland and her Nordic Partners through the centuries.
All of our tartan is double width (140-152cm) medium weight 11-13oz, if you would like to enquire about commissioning lightweight or heavyweight please Contact Us.
