The Story behind our Queen of Scots Tartan

Originally designed to celebrate the re-creation of the Scottish Parliament and the restoration of this unique monarchical title after nearly 300 years, the Queen of Scots Tartan is dedicated to Mary Queen of Scots, who was the first woman to rule Scotland in her own right. She is perhaps, Scotland's most famous monarch. Mary also had a strong and legitimate claim to the throne of England too. How different the history of the British Isles may have been had she not been forced to abdicate in 1567. The colours were originally inspired by Scotland’s national emblem - the thistle and overlaid with bands of royal purple to represent the Royal Houses which have provided the United Kingdom with monarchs since the Union of the Crowns in 1603.

The colours of this tartan design were also incorporated into the outfit designed for Queen Elizabeth at the official reopening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999.

Queen of Scots Tartan is currently being woven and will be available in April. Please feel free to get in touch and place your pre-order. We'll let you know as soon as it is ready to ship.

Our tartans are woven here in Scotland with British wool, and can be ordered by the metre or half metre. We can also create a bespoke Queen of Scots tartan product for you. Choose from a wide range which includes kilts, shawls, ties, cosmetic bags and more. They will be handmade in our workshop here in the South of Scotland.
