The Design of our Queen of Scots Tartan

Our Queen of Scots tartan matches the specially-designed outfit worn by Queen Elizabeth at the opening of the Scottish Parliament. The colours are inspired by Scotland’s symbol - the thistle – overlaid with bands of royal purple which represent the Royal Houses which have provided the United Kingdom with its monarchs since the Union of the Crowns in 1603. All of our tartan is woven locally with 100% British wool, and can be ordered by the metre or half metre. We can also create a bespoke Queen of Scots tartan product for you. Choose from a wide range which includes kilts, shawls, ties, cosmetic bags and more. They will be handmade in our workshop in the South of Scotland.

The Story behind our Queen of Scots Tartan

Originally designed to celebrate the re-creation of the Scottish Parliament and the restoration of this unique monarchical title after nearly 300 years, the Queen of Scots Tartan is also dedicated to Mary Queen of Scots, who was the first woman to rule Scotland in her own right. She was married to the King of France and was briefly Queen there. Mary also had a strong claim to the throne of England too. How different the history of the British Isles may have been had she not been forced to abdicate in 1567.
